![]() The Corps couldn't have been involved in "helping to save the world," here or elsewhere - that doesn't fit. * I believe the story of Bester's scanning the Minbari at the behest of EarthForce, like other missing stories I've discussed elsewhere, was intentionally cut out of the canon books because it doesn't fit the writers' agenda. * The war, and the desperate measures EarthGov went to try to save the planet, also set in motion Morgan Clark's obsession with planetary security that led to him falling to the Shadows later on. This was a "marriage of convenience." (.Then again, everything about the relationship between the Senate and Bester was already a marriage of convenience.) Johnston still wanted Bester murdered for personal reasons, and had tried to kill him several times already, and Bester had been planning Johnston's death for years himself. * This secret rendition was tense for all parties, not only because of the obvious threat to all of humanity that brought them together in the first place, but because the EarthForce brass and the Senate absolutely hated trusting telepaths with this (there was no way to independently verify they were telling the truth, and not somehow trying to spin things to their own advantage) - on top of the other long-standing hatreds e.g. This is how he met Ben-Zion - they weren't "buddies" as Garibaldi thinks (haha, Bester isn't "buddies" with anyone), but they did know one another. * But first, EarthForce had to know who and what they were dealing with, and so, after capturing some Minbari scouts, EarthForce brought the prisoners to "The Icehouse" on Ganymede to be scanned. * EarthForce did some desperate things during the war to save humanity, because the threat really was that serious. Yes, it's inconvenient for the in-world historians who want to erase Delenn's complicity, deify Sheridan and try to blame All The Things on Bester. And unless we're honest about Minbari brutality, we can't be honest about EarthForce's efforts to stop the Minbari invaders. This isn't my personal bone to pick, but it's important to note in the context of the overall dishonesty of much of the storytelling. * The show seriously whitewashes Minbari brutality. * The Minbari moderates had no power to stop the war once it got going, due to the influence and honor of the warrior caste leaders. * Secret back-channel negotiations with the Minbari failed. * It took the Minbari a while to get their war machine up to speed, to set up supply lines and such (per JMS interview), but after six months or such it was really becoming apparent that Earth was in Deep Shit, even if this wasn't entirely public yet. ![]() And the Minbari were much stronger than EarthForce. And after first contact went Horribly Wrong (TM), the Minbari (thanks Delenn) declared Total War on humanity - death to every human, everywhere, on Earth or off. ![]() But we screwed it up (see, the Omega Incident). The Centauri hadn't had contact with them for centuries, and everyone in the galaxy basically left them the hell alone. * The Minbari were a completely unknown enemy. book, are you going to tell us that story?īehind the Gloves will cover it eventually (I'm working now on prequel novellas that take place during Dark Genesis and try once again to fix the mess that is that book), but for now: It was as if McDwyer's brain had been imprinted with something not Human at all - it didn't react like a Human brain, or even like the Minbari prisoners Bester had scanned during the war."Īnd. "But the madman's defenses were too powerful, too alien. In case you missed it, on page 207 of Deadly Relations, it says this:
